サイトワード ローマ字読みでは読めない英単語

英語には、ローマ字読みでは読めない単語がたくさんある。
たとえば「ONE」という単語は、ローマ字読みだと「オネ」になってしまうから、ここでつっかえる生徒もいる。
「First」も、ローマ字読みでは「フィアスト」になって「ファースト」とは読めない。
英語にはフォニックスという、読み方のルールをまとめた教材があるのだが、そのフォニックスのルールでも読めない英単語がたくさんある。
それを「サイトワード（Sight Words）」と呼ぶ。
サイトワードというのは、英語の日常会話や児童書に出てくる単語のうち、非常に読みにくい英単語のことだ。
なのでサイトワードがスラスラ読めるようにならないと、文章を読むのが難しくなるのだという。
そこでアメリカの小学生は、このサイトワードをまず覚えるのだという。

ドルチのサイトワーズ
サイトワードとは、ひと目見ただけで読めて意味がわかる必要がある言葉のことだ。
サイトワードには2種類あって、1930年代にまず作られたのが「ドルチのサイトワード（The Dolch Sight Words）」だ。
ドルチは学年別に220語のサイトワーズをリスト化した。
具体的にどんな単語が入っているかというと、次のような単語だ。
幼稚園までに覚えておくべき単語
